Greencastle, IN - The Oberlin College women's basketball team dropped a 75-60 decision at DePauw University on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Alyson Jefferson and junior
Camille Zinaich led the way with 18 points each for the Yeowomen, while sophomore
Lily Najmulski cashed in three 3-pointers to finish with nine points. Oberlin went toe-to-toe with the high-powered Tigers for three of the four quarters but a lackluster second proved to be the difference in the end.
Oberlin turned in a promising first quarter, staying with the Tigers throughout the opening 10-minute session. A Najmulski triple-hit gave the Yeowomen an 11-8 advantage at the 4:11 mark and in the closing moments
Krystal Montas deposited a long-range strike of her own as Oberlin trailed just 17-16 at the end of the period.
Unfortunately, Oberlin was unable to sustain its pace in the second quarter as the Tigers outscored them 21-7 in the frame with the Yeowomen shooting just 3-of-12 from the floor.
Despite the 38-23 halftime deficit, the Yeowomen continue to fight. Another three from Najmulski had Oberlin back within 10, 42-32, with just under eight minutes left in the stanza but the Tigers answered back with a 14-4 response run to balloon their lead out to 20, 56-36.
A jumper from Zinaich had Oberlin within 14 points early in the fourth but the Tigers never let up as the Yeowomnen would get no closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
Oberlin lost the battle of the boards 42-25 with 18 of those Tiger rebounds coming on the offensive end that led to 23 second chance points for the victors. DePauw's bench bunch also outscored its Oberlin counterparts 41-9.
Oberlin shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the floor, while the Tigers finished at a 47.7 percent (31-of-65) clip.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to 11-4 overall and 2-2 in the league, while the Tigers moved to 12-4 and remained unblemished in the NCAC at 5-0.
The Yeowomen return home to host Wooster on Wednesday night. Tip-time is set for 6 p.m.
