Jefferson Records Double-Double as Oberlin Edges Past Wooster

OBERLIN, OH - Alyson Jefferson collected a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Oberlin College women's basketball team over the Wooster Fighting Scots 61-50 at home Wednesday. After a heavy push in the final quarter of the game, the Crimson and Gold improve to 3-2 in the NCAC and 12-4 overall.

Oberlin returns to action when they host Denison at home on Saturday, January 20. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.

In addition to Jefferson's double-double, the Yeowomen were led by Krystal Montas, who put up nine points, seven rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Camille Zinaich added 14 points, eight rebounds while Lily Najmulski added another 11 points.

Oberlin shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up 17 assists on 19 made field goals, led by Jefferson with seven.

Oberlin did a great job disrupting Wooster's shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Katherine Csiszar led the way individually for the Yeowomen with two rejections.

How It Happened
Oberlin started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a three from Gina Lombard, to take an early lead with 8:21 left in the first quarter. The Crimson and Gold lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with an 18-13 advantage. Oberlin relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.

The home team kept their first-quarter lead intact before going on a 6-0 run starting at the 8:28 mark in the second period. The Fighting Scots cut into that 24-15 lead, but the Yeowomen still enjoyed a 30-27 advantage heading into halftime. Oberlin scored four of its 12 total points off the bench in the quarter.

After the break, Oberlin held on to its advantage and owned a 44-41 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Crimson and Gold bench made the most of their minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled four of the team's 14 third-quarter points.

Oberlin began tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Zinaich's jumper, to grow the lead to 53-41. The Fighting Scots narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Yeowomen still cruised the rest of the way for the 61-50 win. Oberlin took advantage of eight Wooster turnovers in the quarter, scoring nine points off those takeaways.
