Oberlin Routs Kenyon Behind Strong First Half

OBERLIN, OH - Gina Lombard and Alyson Jefferson combined to score 38 points as the Oberlin College women's basketball team dominated Kenyon 61-40 on Wednesday night. The Yeowomen improve to 2-1 in the conference and 11-3 overall. 

Lombard led the Crimson and Gold with 21 points and three steals, while shooting 6-9 from the arch including five in the first half. Jefferson tacked on 17 points and three steals, while Krystal Montas chipped in nine points, seven rebounds, six steals and three blocks off of the bench.

Oberlin out-rebounded Kenyon 38-32 in Wednesday's game, led by seven boards from Camille Zinaich. The Yeowomen also grabbed 14 offensive rebounds and scored 11 second-chance points.

Oberlin forced 19 Kenyon turnovers while committing just ten themselves. The Yeowomen turned those takeaways into 22 points on the offensive end of the floor. Montas' six steals led the way for Oberlin.

How It Happened

Oberlin started out the scoring by going on a 12-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Montas, to take an early lead with 3:56 left in the first quarter. The Yewoomen then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter-break with a 16-3 advantage. Oberlin capitalized on six Kenyon turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.

Oberlin kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 10-0 run starting at the 6:52 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Jefferson, to increase its lead to 31-9. The Crimson and Gold proceeded to tack on four points to that lead and enjoyed a 41-15 advantage heading into halftime. Oberlin forced six Kenyon turnovers in the period and turned them into 10 points.

After intermission, Oberlin held on to its advantage and owned a 48-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Oberlin played well near the basket, scoring four of its seven points in the paint.

Oberlin kept its lead intact before going on a 12-0 run to grow the lead to 61-37 with 1:04 to go in the contest. The Owls narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Yeowomen still cruised the rest of the way for the 61-40 win. Oberlin got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring four of its 13 total points.

» Oberlin held the Owls to only 31.2 percent shooting from the field, and never trailed after taking a 16-3 lead in the first quarter.
» Lombard, Jefferson, and Montas combined to account for 77 percent of the Crimson and Gold points.
