OBERLIN, OH -- The Oberlin College volleyball team opened North Coast Athletic Conference play with a commanding 3-1 victory (25-27, 25-17, 25-20, 25-13) over the visiting Kenyon College Owls on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The Oberlin attack was paced by Andréa Jones, who finished with 16 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .333. Junior Cami Sweet was also effective up front, finishing with 12 kills while hitting .688 with just one error on 16 swings. Classmate Natalie Dufour also added nine finishes in the win.Â
Oberlin racked up a season-high 17 aces in the match, led by the sophomore duo of Zeynep Kaya and Iris Archibald as Kaya dropped in a career-high seven with Archibald also matching a season-high with five.Â
Defensively, The Yeowomen had two players reach double figures in digs as Archibald had 17 and Jillian Jendsen finished with 12.
How It Happened
SET 1 | The Yeowomen came up short in a back-and-forth first set, losing 27-25 in a game that featured seven lead changes and was tied 15 times. Neither team led by more than four points in the match.
SET 2 | Oberlin fired back from a first-set loss to take the second set 25-17, evening the match at one set apiece. The Yeowomen scored first and never trailed in the set to earn the victory. Oberlin opened up as much as a nine point lead at 24-15 before closing out the set. The Oberlin offense also got a boost from six aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | Oberlin built on that second-set success with a victory in set number three to open up a lead at two sets to one with a 25-20 victory. Oberlin took the lead for good at 12-11 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the OC took control. The Yeowomen racked up 17 kills over the course of the session.
SET 4 | Oberlin earned a match win with a 25-13 fourth-set victory, winning their third straight set. The Yeowomen led from the opening point on in the frame to secure the victor and would go up by as much as 13 points at 23-10 before finishing off the stanza. Oberlin also supplemented their offense with seven aces in the set.
