Granville, Ohio – Taking on the top seed of the 2023 NCAC Tournament, the Oberlin College men's lacrosse team fell to 13
th-ranked Denison 18-6 on Thursday night. The loss ends the Yeomen's season at an even 8-8 overall and 4-5 against conference competition.
Five different players scored goals, but it was
Ryan Blasberg who led the charge with a pair of goals and an assist. A mainstay on the defense,
Kiernan Stone brought in five ground balls and three caused turnovers: a team-high in both categories.
Hal Nathan won the game's opening faceoff to give
Jacob Starcke a clear shot on cage. After the Denison keeper made the stop, the Big cleared the ball downfield to score their first goal. The frontrunners scored another five before the Crimson and Gold cut the run as Blasberg found
Jack Duffy to get on the board.
Down 7-1, Blasberg added a solo score before Starcke added his first on a man-up pass from
Max Cha. After Nathan won the ensuing faceoff, Cha's field vision aided the Yeomen again when he found
Niko Maheras to cut the Denison lead to four.
The Big Red offense went on a rampage over the next minutes of 22 gameplay, scoring five unanswered goals to take a 13-4 lead over Oberlin. Ending the drought, Oberlin's
Jonas Taylor-Lillquist forced a turnover on the defensive end of the field to give Blasberg his third goal of the night. Even with the setback, Denison's high-octane offense didn't skip a beat as they responded with three-straight goals to end the third quarter.
Fifth-year senior
Michael Muldoon notched the Crimson and Gold's sixth and final goal of the contest as the Big Red tacked on two insurance goals in the final minutes of action.
The 18-6 loss eliminates Oberlin from the conference tournament and effectively ends the Yeomen's season. Denison will move on to take on two-seed Kenyon in Sunday's championship game in Granville.
With their season at a close, Oberlin looks ahead to fall ball and preparations for the 2024 season.
