Bats Silenced by the Blue Streaks

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College baseball team mustered just three hits as the visiting John Carroll University Blue Streaks left Dill Field with a 5-3 victory over the Yeomen on a cold, wet, and windy Wednesday afternoon.

JCU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but the Yeomen didn't go down without a fight. Oberlin plated a pair in the third to trim the deficit down just one as Jacob Thompson poked a single through the left side to score Max Cairo and Ethan Hurwitz would later plate Thompson on a sacrifice fly to center.

The Yeomen would tie the game in the fourth as Sean Livingstone roped a two-out RBI double down the right field line, scoring Chris Wolfe all the way from first base. However, little did anyone know at the time that would be Oberlin's last hit of the game.

The only other Yeoman to reach base the rest of the way was Vince Dolcemaschio as he led off the sixth inning with a walk.

Thompson got the start on the mound, going five innings, giving up three runs on six hits, two walks, and a hit batter to accompany his five struckouts.

JCU would take the lead in the sixth off of Alexander Norris (1-2) as Joe Olsavsky lifted a sac fly into left. The Blue Streaks would later take advantage of an Oberlin error to push across another run in the eighth.

Max Wassarman, Luigi Smarro, and Ty Weatherspoon each worked an inning out of the Yeomen bullpen, combining to allow just one hit, one unearned run, and two walks. The trio also accounted for five of the Yeomen's 12 strikeouts with three of those coming courtesy of Weatherspoon.

Samuel Basso (3-0) tossed three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win before sophomore Christian Bedolla made his collegiate debut, retiring all six batters he faced to lock down the save.

Oberlin fell back to 10-21 on the year, while JCU moved to 24-12.

The Yeomen are back in action on Saturday at Ohio Wesleyan University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon.
