Crawfordsville, IN - The Oberlin College baseball team closed out its two-game set at Wabash College, rallying late to earn a 12-8 win over the Little Giants on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore
Jake Blozy continued his torrid play, nearly hitting for the cycle as he finished 4-for-4 with a triple, home run, three RBIs, and three runs scored. Oberlin matched a season-high with 17 hits in the win.
Jacob Thompson went 3-for-5 with two runs driven in, while
Max Cairo also added three hits and three runs scored to go along with an RBI. Ethan Hurtwitz and
Chris Wolfe each had two hits and an RBI as well.
It was a seesaw affair throughout the front six innings with the Yeomen ultimately trailing 8-6 going into the seventh inning. However, the Yeomen would get within one in the inning as
Max Cairo led off the frame with a triple and would score on a ground out by Thompson.
After a quick 1-2-3 shutdown inning by
Andrew Shen in the home half of the seventh, the Yeomen bats would go right back to work in the eighth, grabbing a stranglehold on the game with a five-run outpouring as they pounded out five hits in the inning. Senior
Yianni Gardner got the rally rolling with a lead-off triple and he would later trot home on a double down the left field line by Wolfe to tie the game at 8-8 and induce a pitching change.
Wabash reliever Jackson Woehr would retire the first two hitters he faced, but Cairo kept the inning alive and put the Yeomen out in front for good with a run-producing single through the left side to plate Wolfe. Two batters later it was Blozy who delivered the back-breaking blow to the Little Giants as he roped a three-run home run over the wall in right for his second round-tripper of the season.
Shen would sit the Little Giants down in order again in the eighth but they would put two runners on with one out in the ninth but Shen induced a game-ending double play to cap off the victory.
Shen (1-1) gave up just four hits and one run over the final four innings in relief of
Justin Fuls who was tagged for seven runs on eight hits and three walks over the front five frames.
Both teams would trade single tallies in the first inning with the Yeomen run coming courtesy of
Vince Dolcemaschio's two-out opposite-field single through the right side that scored Thompson.
Oberlin took advantage of some sloppy defense in the third inning, scoring three runs in the frame on three hits and two errors. However, Wabash answered back with a pair of its own to knot the game at 4-4 through three innings.
Oberlin would go on to score a run in the fourth and fifth innings to reclaim the lead as
Sean Livingstone had an RBI double to left in the fourth and Hurwitz would do the same in the fifth, scoring Blozy.
Once again Wabash would answer the call, scoring three times in the fifth before adding one more in the sixth to grab an 8-6 lead, but Shen shut their bats down from there to allow the comeback to happen.
The win snapped a 10-game losing streak for the Yeomen, running their record to 10-20 overall and 3-9 in the NCAC. Wabash dropped back to 22-14 and 6-6 in league play.
Oberlin is slated to be back in action on Tuesday at home against Denison University. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon.
