Women’s Tennis Bounced From NCAC Tournament

Granville, OH - The fifth-seeded Oberlin College women's tennis team finished on the wrong end of a 5-4 decision against the fourth-seeded Scots of Wooster in the opening round of the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

Oberlin's No.2 doubles tandem of Dina Nouaime and Lydia Zafeiri were easy 8-3 winners over Katie Materick and Abigail Williams, but the top flight was much more tightly contested. The duo of Marta Laska and Anna Pastore rallied from being down 2-6 against Janaki Jagannathan and Otilia Oita to earn a thrilling 8-7 (7-4) come-from-behind victory to pick up two critical match points while securing their 15th victory of the season.

In singles play , Oita, who has traditionally been the Wooster ace, was inserted in the second slot in the lineup for the first time all season and with the Yeowomen automatically surrendering three points due to a roster shortage this change was impactful.

Laska dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 dismantling of Jagannathan, who played in the top spot only one other time all season.

Oita, comepeting in the second flight for the first time in her career, went on to edge Pastore 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).

Nouaime prevailed over Cherry Patlolla 6-2, 7-5 to leave the fourth position to determine the winner.

Zafeiri was edged 7-6 (7-4) in the opening set, but responded by taking the second session, 6-4. Unfortunately in the decisive third stanza she was upended by a 6-4 margin by Kim Nguyen to give the Scots the victory.

Oberlin concludes the season at 8-10 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC.
