Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Kenyon College Owls on Wednesday afternoon at Dill Field, falling 12-3 and 5-3.
Oberlin pitching issued 15 walks and hit five batters over the course of 18 innings of play as the Owls used the free passes to their advantage in dealing the Yeomen their sixth straight loss.
Oberlin trailed 5-1 going into the ninth of game number two and put forth a valiant comeback bid but the rally ultimately fell short as
Jay Aghanya hit a hard line drive to center that Drew Robinson tracked down to leave the potential game-tying runs stranded on base.
The Yeomen ninth started with a single from
David Curtin and then
Vince Dolcemaschio followed with his third hit of the game. Senior
Sean Livingstone kept the train moving with an RBI single to right center to bring the tying run to the plate and chase Owls' starter Lewis Cropper from the game.
Reliever Sam Richards would pickup two outs upon entering, but senior
Yianni Gardner would keep hope alive as he singled off the leg of Richards, allowing Dolcemaschio to race in from third to trim the gap down to just two but unfortunately Aghanya's liner was corralled as the Owls hung on for the sweep.
Give credit to Yeomen relievers
Alexander Norris and
Luigi Smarro for even keeping Oberlin within striking distance as Norris worked three innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run before Smarro followed with two innings of no-hit ball down the stretch.
Both teams would post single tallies in the first inning with the Yeomen run coming courtesy of senior
Max Anastasio as he dumped a single into right field to score
Jake Blozy. It would be the lone blemish of the game from Cropper as he stymied the Yeomen hitters for the next seven innings before running into trouble in the ninth.
Cropper (3-2), who was charged with all three runs, worked around 10 hits and walked just one to go along with three strikeouts as he notched his third win of the year, which was aided by nine men being left on base by the Yeomen.
Regrettably, Oberlin starter
Ty Weatherspoon (2-1) didn't have his best stuff as he lasted just four innings aftering issuing six walks and surrendering four runs on four hits to accompany his four strikeouts.
The Yeomen more than doubled the Owls in the hits column at 11-5 with Gardner (2) and Hurwitz (2) joining Dolcemaschio (3) with a multi-hit game.
The Owls jumped all over the Yeomen from the onset in game one, wasting no time scoring four runs on four hits, two walks, and a hit batter in the top part of the first inning off Aghanya.
Oberlin would get one back in the second inning as a bases-loaded catcher's interference call would send
Chris Wolfe across the dish.
The Owls swelled their lead out to 7-2 heading into the home half of the fourth and Oberlin tried to work its way back into the game, plating a pair in the inning on an RBI single by
Joe Strabley and a sac fly from Blozy.
However, the Owls responded with three runs in the fifth and went to add solo tallies in the sixth and seventh to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome as the Yeomen bats also went silent the rest of the way.
Aghanya (2-2) lasted just 3.2 innings, surrendering 10 hits and seven runs (five earned) to go along with two walks, two strikeouts, and two hit batters.
Max Wassarman was also greeted rather rudely out of the Yeomen bullpen as the Owls roughed him up for five hits and three runs in his lone inning of work.
The Yeomen dropped back 9-16 overall and 2-8 in the NCAC, while Kenyon improved to 15-10 and 3-5 in league play.
Oberlin will be back in action tomorrow night at Chatham University with first pitch set for 7:30 p.m.
