Hiram, Ohio – Taking on the reigning conference champions, the Oberlin College softball team came up empty in a doubleheader at Hiram on Tuesday night. Falling 9-2 in game one, then 8-1 in game two, the Yeowomen move to 8-22 on the season and 3-7 in conference play.
Oberlin jumped out to a 1-0 lead after
Kailey Dunham singled to center field, bringing
Maria Chutko home to score. After giving up the first run, the Terriers scored a trio of runs in the bottom half of the third inning before adding another three in the fourth. Down 7-1, Oberlin outlasted the Hiram pitching staff as
Lalli Lopez walked to first with the bases full for a
Katie Austin run. The Terriers would survive the inning and hold off the Yeowomen for a final score of 9-2.
Game two began with a similar pace of Oberlin earning the opening run. After being hit by a pitch,
Daisha Bouknight earned first base as Lopez,
Haley Bartsch, and
Alaina Di Dio advanced for a 1-0 lead. Hiram scored eight-straight runs in the ensuing innings to put the Yeowomen in a seven-run deficit. In the top of the seventh inning, Bartsch got on base with a hit to left field. The senior stole second before advancing to third on a
Haley Carlson ground out. Bartsch looked to finish the trip but Hiram ended the run after catching a pop up from
Kathryn Beeman.
