Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team dropped a pair of games to Baldwin Wallace on Thursday evening. Game one ended in five innings with a final score of 16-1, but game two saw improvement as Oberlin suffered just a 3-1 defeat. The setbacks push the Crimson and Gold to 7-19 (2-4) as they look ahead to an NCAC schedule.
After a hot start to game one, where
Maria Chutko stole third and rounded towards home to get Oberlin on the board, the Yeowomen came up empty in offensive action. Through five innings, the Crimson and Gold amassed just four hits, led by
Mia Brito with a double in the fourth inning.
Oberlin threw four different pitchers in the game as the hurling staff struggled to maintain the hot bats of the Yellow Jackets. Ultimately, the Yeowomen came up on the wrong side of a 16-1 score that ended in five innings.
After a quick run from BW, the young squad of Oberlin responded with an Alspach run on a wild pitch by the Yellow Jackets. Now tied at 1-1, Oberlin battled to reign in the visitors, taking them out 1-2-3 over the next couple of innings. On a fielder's choice, BW scored again in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 2-1. They added one more in the seventh as the Yeowomen looked to make a final-inning comeback.
With two outs,
Kailey Dunham singled up the middle for a base hit, with the tying run stepping up to the plate. Chutko hit the ball to the third baseman trying to keep Oberlin's hope alive, but the infielder stepped up and caught the line drive to secure a 3-2 Baldwin Wallace victory.
Oberlin looks to bounce back from the losses when they celebrate their senior class this Saturday, April 15. The Yeowomen will take on the Tigers of DePauw, with game one beginning at 1pm and game two following at 3pm. Senior Day festivities will take place prior to the first game.
