Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College men's tennis team earned a key conference win, knocking off the visiting College of Wooster Fighting Scots, 7-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Yeomen carried a 2-1 match advantage into singles play, winning in the second and third doubles flights. The duo of
Sean Billerbeck and
Rohan Gold were 8-2 victors over Shivam Dewan and Alex Drewes at No. 2, while the third pairing of
James Dill and
Grant North took down Namit Misra and Walker Wood, 8-4.
Billerbeck went on to have a tight first set against Gabriel Escobar in the top singles flight, but he ultimately prevailed in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-5). He then used that momentum to bury Escobar 6-1 in the second.
After winning the opening set 6-1n the third position,
Shawn Lisann ultimately won by retirement as Patrick Johnson had to withdraw from the match.
Sebastien Naginski earned a three-set victory over Dewan at No. 4, winning the first set 6-3 before falling 2-6. However, the Yeomen sophomore was able to secure his seventh win of the year with a 6-4 win in the third set.
In the back part of Oberlin lineup, the senior tandem of Dill and
Sam Topper were both victorious with Dill downing Misra 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth flight, while Topper followed suit by beating Connor Streeter by matching 6-4 counts.
The win moved Oberlin's record to 8-7 overall and 2-3 in the NCAC.
The Yeomen are back in action on Saturday at Wittenberg University.
