Oberlin, OH – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team notched their first home victory behind an impressive offensive push, with four Yeowomen tallying at least four points. The team flourished in the high-scoring affair, coming out on top 22-19 as they improve to 2-2 on the season.
A trio of Yeowomen secured new career-bests in the game as
Lauren Mills tallied four goals and four assists for a best eight points.
Emily Shimabukuro also set a new best for points, with seven comprised of four goals and three assists. Fourth-year
Ellie Jensen brought in ten draw controls, surpassing her previous best of eight in 2020.
Megan Hiller and
Audrey Koren earned hat tricks in the victory with four and three goals, respectively. Backing the defense,
Sophia Ferrantelli and
Frances Wilson shared time in cage, with Ferrantelli making seven saves.
Hope got on the board first with back-to-back goals before Mills put two away to tie the game. The shootout continued with six more goals between the two teams over the next four minutes. Hope came out ahead 6-4, extending their lead to four with a minute left.
Katie McMorris brought the Yeowomen back within two to end the quarter.
The momentum continued for Oberlin in the opening minutes of the second period with Jensen scoring on a free position opportunity. Mills connected with
Larissa Andrick for the equalizer off the draw just 14 seconds later. After swapping goals, the Flying Dutch pulled ahead 10-8 with 11:20 still remaining in the half.
Abbie Patchen brought the Crimson and Gold back within one, but not without a quick shot from Hope to regain their two-goal lead.
Alee Holman-Evans found Shimabukuro inside the eight-meter at the 5:29 mark as Oberlin battled to stay in the game. The visitors scored another pair of goals before the half but a rocket from Hiller in the final minute set the stage at 13-11 heading into the half.
Early second-half scoring from Hope gave the Flying Dutch a four-goal lead; their largest of the afternoon. Shimabukuro responded with the best two and a half minutes of the game, finding the back of the net for three-consecutive goals and assisting Mills on a fourth to tie the game. Tied at 16 with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter, Shimabukuro hit Mills just before Koren found Hliler to give Oberlin the 18-16 advantage.
The Crimson and Gold continued their scoring run with three more goals, all coming off the stick of Koren, to pull ahead 21-16 in the fourth quarter. The Flying Dutch gave their best effort at a comeback to pull within two of the Yeowomen with 3:14 remaining. The hope for the visitors was short-lived as
Alexis Escobedo drove straight through eight-meter for her first goal of the season, giving Oberlin the 22-19 win.
The 22 goals are the most in a single game for the team under the helm of
Kim Russell and
Erin Kehn. The last time Oberlin more than 22 goals was in 2018 in the team's 23-1 victory over Hiram.
