Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team hosted Heidelberg for a doubleheader to open its home schedule on Thursday afternoon. The Yeowomen dropped game one 6-2 but bounced back in the second game to win 3-2. Team improves to a 4-10 record ahead of conference action.
Game one saw
Katie Austin earn the start where she pitched into the fourth inning before
Jess Friedman came in for relief. The tandem combined for a pair of strikeouts while Friedman closed out the game giving up only one hit.
The Student Princes struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Oberlin responded with one of their own coming as
Kailey Dunham's double to right center sent
Alaina Di Dio all the away around the bases to even the game at 1-1. After a scoreless second and third inning, Heidelberg outpaced Oberlin through the next three frames to own a 6-1 lead. Oberlin looked to chip away in the bottom of the fifth, getting a run off a Berg error but the Crimson and Gold scoring ended there for a four-run loss.
First-year
Hailey Alspach earned the start on the mound in the second half of the doubleheader, where she pitched all seven innings. Alspach allowed just seven hits and a pair of earned runs on 106 pitches.
In game two, the Yeowomen reset their game plan and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. A triple by
Mia Brito brought Chutko home just minutes before Di Dio's ground out brought Brito around the bases. The team kept the momentum rolling into the second inning when a steal from
Lalli Lopez gave headway for the senior to come home. Heidelberg tallied their first run of the game on a sac fly in the fifth. With one out left in the seventh and a 3-2 scoreline, the Student Princes looked to tie the game but a ground out to second gave Oberlin the win.
Oberlin looks ahead to this weekend when they welcome home alumni and fans for a doubleheader with Kenyon. The NCAC opener is set for Saturday, April 1 with the first pitch to be thrown at 1 p.m. A live stream for the games is available
