Granville, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team traveled to Denison University for a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Yeowomen fell 9-3 in game one before being overpowered by the Big Red 9-0 in five innings. The NCAC losses drop the team back to 4-12 on the year and 0-2 in conference play.
Hailey Alspach earned the game one start but after just six pitches,
Jess Friedman stepped up to the mound for relief. Friedman pitched six innings, but Alspach earned the loss to move to 2-6 on the year.
Denison caught fire early with four runs in the first inning, highlighted by a homer from Annabelle Calderon. Down 4-0, the Yeowomen finally got on the board in the top of the fourth when
Loren Carter singled to right field. An error but the outfielder allowed the sophomore to advance to second and brought
Haley Bartsch home. The runs kept coming when Hailey Carlson hit to the outfield and the speedy feet of the Yeowomen brought
Lalli Lopez and Carter to home plate.
The defensive struggles for the Crimson and Gold continued in the next innings when Denison responded with five runs. Oberlin was unable to regain their fourth innings momentum and ultimately fell to the Big Red 9-3.
Katie Austin and
Calliope Lissak split time on the mound in game two, but the pitching changes weren't enough to hold off the Big Red. The home team scored twice in the opening inning and then added seven more runs in the third to clinch the run-rule victory. The sole bright spot came off a hit from Carter in the top of the second inning.
Oberlin continues their multi-day run with a doubleheader against Kenyon at home tomorrow, April 3. The second day of games begins at 3:30pm, with game two following at 5:30pm. A live stream for the games is available
