Ada, Ohio - The Oberlin College baseball team completed its three-game home-and-home series against Ohio Northern University in Ada on Thursday afternoon with the Yeomen falling 4-1.
Sophomore starter
Ty Weatherspoon was simply sensational for the Yeomen, spinning five innings of scoreless baseball that saw the Amherst, Ohio, native strikeout a career-high seven while allowing just two hits and two walks along the way.
Unfortunately, Blake Peterson was nearly equally as impressive through the front four innings as he kept the Yeomen off the board, surrendering one walk and two hits before turning things over to Jack Hutchins.
Oberlin would strand eight runners on base between the third, fourth, and fifth innings to open the door for the Polar Bears to strike first. In the home half of the sixth, two of the first three ONU hitters would reach against left-handed reliever
Owen Potter and Jacob Wenning would make him pay with an RBI single to right field for the game's first run.
However, Oberlin would respond in the top of the seventh as
Jake Blozy led off the frame with a triple and he would come in to score on
Max Cairo's two-out infield single to level the score at 1-1.
Unfortunately, things would unravel for the Oberlin bullpen in the bottom of the seventh as ONU posted three runs on just one hit thanks to three walks and an error to break the game open.
The top three hitters in the Oberlin lineup accounted for all five of its hits with
Ethan Hurwitz and Cairo each posting a pair and Blozy one.
Hutchins allowed just one run and four hits over three innings of work to earn the win, while
Jimmy Fitzgerald was saddled with the loss for the Yeomen.
Oberlin is slated to be back in action on Saturday, March 11 with a doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg.
