Women’s Lacrosse Commands the Colonels

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's lacrosse team continued its torrid play, turning in a commanding 21-11 victory over Centre College Colonels on a chilly Saturday at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex.

Eight different players got in the scoring column for Oberlin with first-year Megan Hiller leading the way with a career-high six tallies. Lauren Mills and Emily Shimabukuro each cashed in four goals and an assist, while Marley Cox and Abbie Patchen netted a pair as well.

It was nip-and-tuck throughout the bulk of the first quarter, but Oberlin would outscore Centre 8-1 in the second session to break the game wide open.

An own goal gave Oberlin a 2-1 lead at the 9:04 mark of the first quarter and the Yeowomen would never trail again. It was 3-3 midway through the opening frame; however, the relentless Oberlin attack would find its rhythm, scoring five times over the final eight minutes of the session. A free-position finish Shimabukuro made it 6-4 and Mills and Hiller would also deposit goals before the first-quarter horn sounded as the Yeowomen led 8-5 after 15 minutes of action.

Oberlin started the second period with three straight scores courtesy of Kaela Wilson, Hiller, and Shimabukuro to increase the cushion out to six at 11-5. A Lily Gahm finish would temporality halt the Oberlin charge, but the Yeowomen would close the half by posting five straight tallies to carry 16-6 advantage into the intermission. The barrage featured back-to-back scores from Hiller, and goals from Patchen, Cox, and Alexis Escobedo.

Oberlin would keep the running-clock differentials throughout the second half, adding five more tallies on the scoreboard along the way.

The Yeowomen finished with a 23-11 margin in draw controls with Ellie Jensen leading the way with eight while rookie Olivia Corradi guided the defense with five ground balls.

Sophia Ferrantelli made four saves through the front three quarters before Frances Wilson added three more denials in the fourth period.

Oberlin, which is now won four in row to move to 4-2, is back in action on Tuesday afternoon at Mount Union. The opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
