Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's tennis team finished on the wrong end of marathon 5-4 decision against the visiting Otterbein University Cardinals late Saturday night at the John W. Heisman Field House.
Oberlin's short lineup proved costly in this one the Cardinals only won two of the contested matches but starting with a 3-0 lead in hand it was all they needed to do.
In doubles play, the duo of
Lydia Zafeiri and
Dina Nouaime were easy 8-1 winners over Olivia Eckels and Aubrey McMahon in the second position. However, in the top flight it was anything but easy for either side, but in the end, it was the Cardinal duo of Erin Storrer and Lillia Walter who gutted out an 8-7 (8-6) tiebreak win over
Marta Laska and
Anna Pastore.
In singles play, Oberlin turned in a pair of straight-set victories in the third and fourth positions while the top two battles both went the distance.
Nouaime went unblemished in a pair of 6-0 wins over Rachelle Moses at No. 3, while Zafeiri set aside Cassady Shough 7-6 (7-1), 6-0 in the fourth position.
At No. 2, Pastore picked up her third straight win by outlasting Walter 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, leaving the No. 1 match to determine the winner.
Storrer got the best of Laska in the opening set, winning 6-0. The Oberlin ace was able to respond by extending the match with a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreak victory in the second, but would ultimately fall in the decisive third set, 6-2.
The loss leveled the Yeowomen's record to 2-2 on the year. However, they will have another opportunity to go back above the .500 mark on Sunday as the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets come to town for a 1 p.m. crosstown clash.
