Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team welcomed the Ashland Eagles to the John W. Heisman Field House on Saturday afternoon and the visitors from NCAA Division II left town with a 7-2 win.
Both of the Yeomen's points came in doubles play as they were victorious in the second and third flights. The No. 3 tandem of
James Foster and
Grant North outlasted the duo of Fabian Bussard and Rodrigo Ludgero by an 8-6 count and the pairing of
Sebastien Naginski and
Rohan Gold followed with an 8-5 triumph over Omar Prince and Reid Opel.
It was a different story in singles action as the Eagles swept through all six spots, but the Yeomen certainly made them work for it.
Gold won his first set in the second slot, 6-2, against Tomas Paskauskas but the Eagles' freshman would bounce back with a pair of 6-4 wins to earn the victory.
After dropping the first set 7-6 (7-5) against Opel at No. 6, North forced a super-breaker by going unblemished in the second stanza with a 6-0 win. However, Opel won the race to 10, 10-5.
Freshman
Shawn Lisann also forced a second-set tiebreak against Ludgero, falling 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 4, while
Sean Billerbeck (No. 1), Naginski (No. 4) and Foster (No. 6) each won at least seven games in their respective matches.
Oberlin is back in action with a midweek tilt against Allegheny on Wednesday, March 1. The first serve is set for 5 p.m.
