Cleveland, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team put forth a valiant effort against the nation's second-ranked team, but in the end the Spartans lived up to the billing as they defeated the Yeomen 9-0 on Sunday evening.
The tightest doubles bout came in the second position where
Sean Billerbeck and
Rohan Gold dropped an 8-4 decision to Matthew Chen and, Ansh Shah. Oberlin fell 8-3 at No. 1 and 8-2 in the third flight.
In singles action, the No. 2 battle was the lone match to go the distance as Gold won the first set against Anmay Devaraj 6-2 before dropping the next two frames 1-6 and 0-1 in the super-breaker.
Billerbeck won five games in the top position, but it wasn't enough as he fell in straight sets against Matthew Plunkett 6-3, 6-2.
Shawn Lisann won three games in first set at No. 4 and fellow rookie
James Foster got two games at No. 6 in the opening set but both Yeomen ultimately went down in straight sets.
Oberlin is back in action at home on Saturday against Division II Ashland. The first serve is set for high noon.
