Oberlin, OH – Getting their 2023 campaign rolling, the Oberlin College women's lacrosse team hosted Capital on a windy Saturday afternoon. The Yeowomen battled through three quarters of intense action before the Comets caught fire, putting up ten goals in the final 11 minutes for a 22-12 victory. Oberlin drops to 0-1 while Capital moves to 1-0.
Second-years
Lauren Mills and
Katie McMorris led the scoring effort for the Yeowomen with four and three goals, respectivley. Seven other Obies tallied goals in the match including
Megan Hiller (2) and
Larissa Andrick (1) with the first goals of their career.
Sophia Ferrantelli earned the start in cage for Oberlin, amassing 11 saves over 3.5 quarters.
Janny McCormick came in as relief for the second-year keeper and added an additional save on the game.
The Yeowomen got the season started right out of the gate with a pair of unassisted goals from Mills and McMorris. The Comets responded with three of their own to take the lead. Mills added another before the end of the quarter off a pass from senior
Ellie Jensen.
Oberlin reclaimed their lead early in the second quarter behind a free position shot to the lower half of the net. Capital moved ahead on the scoreboard, 6-5 as
Izzy Sunday drove through the eight and scored off an assist from Jensen. Down two goals in the final minutes of the half, Mills and McMorris connected for a man-down goal to cut the lead.
Besides a goal from Mills at the 10:56 mark, it was all Capital in the first half of the quarter, running up the score to 12-9. After a timeout to slow the momentum of the Comets, the Yeowomen shut the visitors out for the next nine minutes while
Emily Shimabukuro and Hiller tabbed their first goals of the season.
Capital dominated the final quarter of action, scoring ten goals in the game's last 15 minutes.
Audrey Koren was the only highlight for Oberlin as
Abbie Patchen found the junior for a man-down goal and a final score of 22-12.
The Yeowomen pick their sticks up and return to Bailey Field again for their next game on Saturday, February 20 against Allegheny. The game is set for 1pm with a live stream will be available
