Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team turned in a commanding a 7-2 victory over the visiting Dutchmen of Hope College on Saturday afternoon.
The Yeomen carried a 2-1 advantage into singles action after winning a pair of close battles in the second and third flights of doubles play. At No. 2,
Sean Billerbeck and
Rohan Gold gutted out an 8-7 victory over Tyler Stafford and Matt Henkel but cruised in the tiebreak set, 7-0. In the third slot, the underclassmen tandem of
Shawn Lisann and
Sebastien Naginski earned a hard fought 8-6 triumph over Justin Fay and Austin Becksvoort.
Oberlin would go on to claim victory in five of the six matches. It was Billerbeck who downed Jacob Burkett in the top position 6-3, 7-5. Gold got by Stafford with relative ease at No. 2, winning 6-3, 6-1.
The tightest singles bout came in the third position were Naginski outlasted Cameron Coates by identical 6-4 counts.
Lisann completed a two-win day by making short work of Fay at No. 4 as the Oberlin rookie dropped just three games in a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
The winning was capped off with senior
James Dill taking care of Henkel 7-5, 6-3 at No 5.
The victory was the first of the season for the Yeomen as they improved to 1-2 in dual matches but will have a tough test tomorrow evening as they tangle the nation's second-ranked team in Case Western Reserve on the road at 5 p.m.
