MARIETTA, OH - Camille Zinaich and Ellie Pollock-Ballard combined to score an impressive 34 total points, but the Oberlin College women's basketball team fell to the Marietta Pioneers 63-56 on the road Saturday.
Zinaich led the Yeowomen with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Pollock-Ballard added 14 points. Alyson Jefferson chipped in as well with 11 points and Oberlin dropped to 9-2 on the season.
The Crimson and Gold return to action in 2024 when they travel for an NCAC match against Hiram on Wednesday, January 3. The Crimson and Gold tipoff against the Terriers at 6 p.m.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-4, Oberlin went on a 6-0 run with 6:23 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Pollock-Ballard, to take a 10-9 lead. The Yeowomen then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 16-15.
Marietta kept adding to that advantage, building a 21-17 advantage before Oberlin went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Zinaich, to take a 22-21 lead. The Pioneers then came roaring back to take a 28-26 lead heading into halftime.
Oberlin's deficit continued to grow after the half, and the Crimson and Gold faced a 48-38 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Oberlin's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled three of the team's 12 third-quarter points.
Oberlin narrowed its deficit to 51-43 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Zinaich's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 51-49 with 4:26 to go in the contest. Marietta responded and outscored the Yeomen the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 63-56. Oberlin took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
