Yeomen Bite the Bulldogs in Season Opener

Adrian, MI - The Oberlin College men's basketball team opened the 2023-24 season in commanding fashion, earning a 67-60 road win at Adrian College on Wednesday night.

Three Yeomen finished in double figures, led by 14 points from Andrew Gannon. Senior Dimitrije Radusinovic added 12, while first-year JJ Gray dropped in 10 in his collegiate debut. Junior point guard Yuuki Okubo had the offense in rhythm, dishing out six assists to go along with nine points.

The bulk of the first half was tightly contested until the Yeomen pulled away towards the end of the session. Oberlin led 10-4 at the 14-minute mark but OC would go cold for the next six-and-a-half minutes before a Radusinovic jumper made it a 12-10 Oberlin advantage with 7:24 left in the frame.

It was a seesaw battle for the rest of the half as the two teams essentially traded baskets until the final minutes. An Okubo jumper put Oberlin back out in front at 23-22 with 2:03 left on the clock. However, the Yeomen would close stanza with a 7-1 spurt that featured a Robert Millard triple-hit and a buzzer-beating floater from Will Bousquette III to give the Yeomen a 30-23 lead at the intermission.

Oberlin picked up where it left off following the restart, increasing its lead to double-digits just 71 seconds into the half on a pair of Gray free throws. At the 15-minute mark the Yeomen found themselves up 15, 42-27, following a Millard layup and halfway through the period Oberlin ballooned the lead all the way out to 55-33 but the Bulldogs wouldn't go down without barking back.

A pair of Seth Logan free throws had the Yeomen cushion shrunk all the way down to 11, 58-47, with 4:48 still left to expire. Another bucket from Gray with 3:30 to go calmed the nerves a bit to increase the lead back out to 15, 62-47. However, Adrian had another push in them, cutting the deficit down to eight but just 77 seconds remained on the clock as the Yeomen were able to hold on for the win despite some critical miscues.

The Yeomen shot 41.6 percent (22-of-53) from the floor, while Adrian finished at 36.2 percent (21-of-58). The difference in the end ultimately proved to be at the free throw line where the Yeomen cashed in 18-of-19 freebies for an 89.5 percent success rate with the Bulldogs going just 11-of-18 for 61.1 percent. OC also finished with a 37-27 advantage on the glass.

Oberlin will be heading right back to the state of Michigan on Saturday for a 2 p.m. battle against the Scots of Alma.
