Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team faced its toughest test of the season and answered the call on Wednesday night at Philips Gym, knocking off the 19th-ranked Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace, 69-65, in double overtime.
Sophomore
Lily Najmulski cashed in a go-ahead 3-pointer from the near wing with 2:48 left to play to break the 65-65 tie and the Yeowomen would lock down defensively the rest of the way to preserve the win.
After Caely Ressler's game-tying triple-try was off the mark with 14 seconds to go,
Angela Kumler was sent to the charity stripe where she calmly deposited her first attempt to make it a two-possession game and all but rubber stamp the victory.
After missing the final two games,
Camille Zinaich returned to the lineup and registered her second double-double of the year with 19 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three assists and three blocked shots.
Alyson Jefferson tacked on 14 points, four assists and four steals while
Angela Kumler helped out with 14 points, four steals and three blocks.
It was Zinaich's step-back jumper in the paint with 12 ticks left in regulation that tied it at 53-53 to force the first overtime. Midway through the extra frame, the Yeowomen trailed 60-57 but four straight points from Zinaich had Oberlin back out in front with under a minute to go. A pair of Bella Valliant free throws gave BW a two-point edge at 63-61, but Jefferson would slice her way to the rim in the closing seconds to extend the game with a strong finish inside.
With both teams trying to find their last bit of energy in the second overtime, the Yeowomen held BW to just two points in the stanza while forcing four turnovers and five missed shot attempts.
It was nip-and-tuck throughout the first half as no more than six points ever separated the two foes. A Kumler triple-hit early in the second quarter leveled the affair at 15-15. Oberlin later led 21-16 with 4:51 left in the half but ultimately settled for a 27-24 cushion at the intermission.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the bulk of the third quarter, claiming a 37-32 lead with 2:27 on the clock, but Oberlin closed the period with a 10-4 spurt that featured back-to-back long-range strikes from
Gina Lombard that gave the home side a 42-41 edge going into the final frame.
BW led 51-47 with 4:18 left in the fourth quarter but once again the stifling Oberlin defense rose to the occasion and held BW to just two points the rest of the way to setup the thrilling comeback victory.
Both sides struggled from the floor with Oberlin finishing with a 31.3 percent clip (21-of-67), while BW ended at 31.5 percent, going 23-of-73. However, OC benefited by depositing 22-of-29 (75.9%) free throws,, while the Yellow Jackets had just 15 attempts at the stripe and made 12.
In a game that featured 13 ties and nine lead changes, it was Oberlin that remained unblemished on the year, running its record to 7-0 while BW fell back to 3-2.
The Yeowomen are back in action on Monday night at Chatham University. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
