Pittsburgh, PA - The Oberlin College women's basketball team got off to a hot start but couldn't sustain the momentum as the Chatham University Cougars dealt the Yeowomen their first loss of the season with a 79-56 victory on Monday night.
Oberlin was plagued by a season-high 25 turnovers that led to 26 Cougar points. OC also struggled with its shot, connecting on just 20-of-60 attempts for a 33.3 percent clip, which included a subpar 3-of-21 (14.3%) showing from beyond the arc.
Camille Zinaich led Oberlin with 20 points and nearly finished with her third straight double-double with nine rebounds to accompany her five assists. Sophomore Lily Najmulski also matched a career-best with 12 points off the bench.
The game started with Oberlin making an administrative technical foul shot prior to tip-off as it jumped-started a 10-0 run that was capped off by a Gina Lombard long-range strike. However, the Cougars would settle in and answer back with a 12-2 burst of their own to tie the game.
Oberlin reclaimed control with a 7-0 response that featured four straight points from Zinaich and a Najmulski triple-hit that made it 19-12 before the Yeowomen ultimately ended the opening period with a 23-14 advantage.
Oberlin led 26-16 with 7:35 left in the first half but the Cougars would roar back from there to take their first lead of the night at 31-30 on a Charjae Brock layup at the 3:16 mark en route to claiming a 41-37 halftime lead and they would never trail again.
Chatham's defensive pressure continued to fluster the Yeowomen following the restart as Oberlin mustered a season-low six third-quarter points as the Cougars pulled away with a 23-point session to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
Oberlin, which received votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, fell to 7-1 on the year while Chatham moved to 6-2.
The Yeowomen are off the next nine days before returning to action on Wednesday, December 13 when they play host to Adrian College at 7 p.m.
