OBERLIN, OH --The Oberlin women's basketball team gutted out a 59-47 win over the visiting Alma College Scots on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
The Yeowomen (4-0) had three players score in double figures, led by Alyson Jefferson, who had 19 points, four assists and two steals. Camille Zinaich added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds and Angela Kumler helped out with 11 points and two blocks.
Led by Zinaich's four offensive rebounds, Oberlin did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 12 second chance points.
Oberlin's defense held Alma to only 18.5 (5-of-27) percent shooting from beyond the arc and 29.8 (17-of-57) percent from the field.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 6-2 advantage, Oberlin went on a 6-0 run with 3:58 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Gina Lombard, to increase its lead to 12-2. The Yeomen then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 17-6 advantage. Oberlin got out and ran in the period, scoring five points on the break.
The Yeowomen maintained their lead in the game's second frame and entered halftime with a 25-14 edge. Oberlin dominated in the paint, scoring six of its eight points close to the basket.
Oberlin continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Jefferson, to expand its lead further to 40-28 with 1:26 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Scots had cut into that lead a tab, but the Yeomen still entered the fourth quarter with a 40-29 edge. Oberlin played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 15 points in the paint.
Oberlin kept its lead intact before going on an 11-0 run, finished off by Ellie Pollock-Ballard's three, to grow the margin to 59-42 with 1:03 to go in the contest and leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.
