BLUFFTON, OH - Behind her first career double-double with the Yeowomen, Krystal Montas led the Oberlin College women's basketball team to a 68-42 victory over Bluffton on Wednesday night. The
Crimson and Gold held the Beavers to just 10% from beyond the arc as they improve to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Their next test comes on Saturday, November 18 when Oberlin opens their home season against Alma. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
With ten points and ten rebounds, Montas led the balanced effort, with three more Yeowomen finishing in double figures. Camille Zinaich paced the pack with 16 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Lily Najmulski tacked on 11 points, and Alyson Jefferson chipped in as well with 11 points and three steals.
Oberlin shared the ball well in Wednesday's game, racking up 22 assists on 25 made field goals. Zinaich's six assists led the Crimson and Gold, while Gina Lombard also helped out with five assists of her own.
The Oberlin defense was effective at taking away the basketball in the matchup, forcing 16 Bluffton turnovers that turned into 11 points on the other end of the floor. Jefferson's three steals led the way individually for Oberlin.
How It Happened
The Crimson and Gold started out the scoring by going on a 6-0 run, culminating in a three from Lombard, to take an early lead in the first quarter. The Yeowomen then added two points to their lead for a 16-8 advantage at the break. Oberlin did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring eight of their 16 points close to the basket.
The Yeowomen used the second period to increase their lead and entered halftime with a 33-21 edge. Oberlin was strong from deep in the second quarter, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 17 points.
Oberlin continued to preserve its lead with a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Montas, to pull ahead to a 41-28 advantage with 3:10 to go in the third. The Yeowomen held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter up 13 points.
Consistently widening their lead, Oberlin opened the final quarter with a 10-0 run, finished off by a Jefferson jumper. The Beavers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Yeowomen still cruised the rest of the way for the 68-42 win. Oberlin got a boost from its bench in the fourth period, with reserves scoring six of its 23 total points.
