WALTHAM, MA - The Oberlin College women's basketball team dominated in their first road-trip, defeating Brandeis 77-46 to win the Judges Invitational Championship. The Yeowomen improve to a perfect 2-0 on the season.
Racking up 28 points, ten rebounds, and eight assists though the two-day tournament, Angela Kumler was named the Judges MVP. Joined her on the All-Tournament Team was Gina Lombard who amassed 29 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
The Yewoomen had three players score in double figures, led by Lombard, who had 24 points and four assists. Alyson Jefferson added 12 points and six assists and Kumler helped out with ten points.
The Oberlin offense made hay from beyond the arc, making 11 threes, led by Lombard with three treys for the Yeowomen.
The Oberlin defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 19 Brandeis turnovers while committing eight. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Ellie Pollock-Ballard led the way individually for the Crimson and Gold with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 9-8, Oberlin went on an 11-0 run with 4:59 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Lombard, to take a 19-9 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Oberlin capitalized on eight Brandeis turnovers in the period, turning them into seven points on the other end of the floor.
The team kept their first quarter lead intact before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 6:50 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Lombard, to increase its lead to 29-12. The Yeowomen kept that lead for the remainder of the period and enjoyed a 37-20 advantage heading into halftime. Oberlin was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of their 18 points.
The Crimson and Gold wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 14-0 run, punctuated by a three from Krystal Montas, to expand its lead further to 51-20 with 5:43 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Judges had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Yeowomen still entered the fourth quarter with a 57-31 edge. Oberlin took advantage of three Brandeis turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of takeaways.
Oberlin started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on an 8-0 run to grow the lead to 65-31 with 6:47 to go in the contest. The Judges narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Yeowomen still cruised the rest of the way for the 77-46 win. Oberlin fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points.
Oberlin hits the court again on Wednesday, November 15 when they take on Bluffton on the road. Tip-off is set for 7pm.
