Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Basketball Held Off by Tigers at Home

Oberlin, Ohio – Although mounting a comeback in the final quarter, the Oberlin College women's basketball team fell to Wittenberg at home on Saturday afternoon. Bryana Woodard put up a career-best seven blocks in the 54-50 loss as the Yeowomen drop to 5-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference and 12-7 overall.

The Crimson and Gold saw two players finish in double-digits, led by sophomore Woodard who tallied 18 points and three rebounds on top of her blocks. Alyson Jefferson added another 13 points with a team-high five assists and three steals. Getting in on the defensive action was first-year Angela Kumler with five steals and four rebounds. Both Jefferson and Jaedyn O'Reilly were responsible for a team-high six rebounds.

Oberlin got off to an early 4-0 lead, maintaining their advantage through the entirety of the first quarter. The Yeowomen held Wittenberg to single digits while tallying four steals in the opening ten minutes. Woodard and Jefferson dominated the paint as they accounted for all of Oberlin's 13 points.

The Tigers' offense caught first in the second quarter, opening with a 10-2 run to take a 21-15 advantage over the home team. A three-pointer from O'Reilly cut into the momentum of the Tigers but, the visitors still managed to get the best of the Yeowomen with another seven unanswered points. After adding only nine points to their score, the Crimson and Gold looked to reset at halftime, down 30-24.

Still looking to find their rhythm, Oberlin Woodard put Oberlin on the board with back-to-back layups off passes from Kumler and Gina Lombard. A hook shot from Woodard brought Oberlin back within one before a Tiger three extended the Wittenberg lead. Neither team scored in the final two minutes of the period as the NCAC battle headed into the final period.

The opening points came again off the hands of Woodard before Jefferson scored again to bring the score to 44-41. With 3:42 remaining, O'Reilly drilled a three-pointer to give Oberlin their first lead since the beginning of the second quarter. Up 46-45, the teams swapped baskets until Wittenberg hit a trey with 30 seconds remaining to secure the win for the Tigers.
