Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College women's basketball team battled against the Denison Big Red in a home matchup on Wednesday night, winning 76-65 to improve to 5-2 in the conference and 12-6 overall. The Yeowomen record their first conference sweep of the season after taking down Denison both on the road and at home.
Four Obies finished with double-digits, led by
Alyson Jefferson with 16 points and three rebounds.
Gina Lombard and
Bryana Woodard tallied 14 and 13 points each and combined for nine rebounds and three assists. The rookies made any impact in the match as
Angela Kumler took away a team-high six steals on top of an impressive 10 points, while
Anora Lee brought in a balanced stat line of six points, four rebounds, and two assists. Notching a new career-high was
Jaedyn O'Reilly who led the team with 10 rebounds and nearly earned a double-double with nine points. The junior also brought in a team-best five assists and one block in the win.
The Crimson and Gold squad caught fire early, opening the game with eight unanswered points and holding the Big Red off the board until midway through the quarter.
Lily Najmulski hit the first three-pointer of the contest while Woodard, Jefferson, and Lombard balanced out the attacking efforts.
Up 19-12 after the first quarter, Kumler continued the momentum with a layup to extend the cushion in the opening seconds of the second period of play. As the Big Red crept back into the game, O'Reilly knocked down a trey to cut the short-lived run. Denison responded with not one, but two layups and three-pointer to find its first lead of the game at 26-24 with 4:22 left in the opening half.
As the competition stiffened, Najmulski hit a jumper at the buzzer to even the score before the Big Red capitalized on a pair of free throws to regain their advantage. Oberlin continued to battle point-for-point with the visiting team but ultimately trailed 30-28 at the break.
Returning to the court, Woodard handed the first points to the Yeowomen, leveling the score once again. Tested in each possession, Oberlin maintained its advantage after
Kendal McCall came up big for a tip-in layup midway through the quarter. Minutes later, Woodard got the most of an 'and-one' opportunity, to push the lead to seven. After shooting .467 and hitting 10-11 from the charity stripe, the Crimson and Gold responded with a resounding 25 points in the third quarter to start the final period of play up 53-44.
It was all rookies in the opening minutes of the final quarter, starting with a pair of free throws from Lee and ending with a three-pointer from Kumler. The young class continued to put in work, as Kumler came up with a break-away layup to put Oberlin up by double-digits and all but rubber stamp the victory.
The Yeowomen continue their home stand this Saturday, January 28 when they play host to the Wittenberg Tigers.
