Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's basketball team suffered its first North Coast Athletic Conference loss of the season as the Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops invaded Phillips Gym and left town with a 75-61 victory on Saturday afternoon.
The Yeowomen were plagued by a season-high 26 turnovers, which proved to be the difference as the Bishops were able to hoist 13 more shot attempts along the way while turning those miscues into 16 points.
Oberlin had three players finish in double figures with
Alyson Jefferson leading the way with 16 points to accompany her four assists and three steals.
Gina Lombard cashed in five triples to post 15 points, while first-year
Angela Kumler added 11 points for her second double-digit scoring performance of the season.
Oberlin jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead but the Bishops settled in and authored a 17-4 run to claim a 17-9 lead with 2:33 left in the frame. However, the Yeowomen would close the quarter with an 8-2 response that featured back-to-back long-range strikes from Lombard and
Lily Najmulski to make it just a 19-17 Bishops' lead after 10 minutes of play.
The Yeowomen would go back out in front midway through the second period, increasing the advantage out to 30-24 on a
Jaedyn O'Reilly 3-pointer with 3:21 left in the stanza but OWU closed the session by orchestrating a 10-3 run to carry a slight 34-33 cushion into the intermission.
Another triple-hit from O'Reily with 5:55 left in the third gave Oberlin a 43-40 lead but the Yeowomen would go scoreless for the rest of the quarter, allowing OWU to finish the stretch with an 11-0 burst to carry a 51-43 lead into the final frame.
Oberlin quickly cut into the deficit as
Camille Zinaich's jumper trimmed the OWU advantage down to three, 51-48, with 9:13 left to play but the Bishops would ultimately pull away as the margin swelled to 10 on Laura Denison's layup at the 4:32 mark and Oberlin would get no closer than eight the rest of the way.
Denison led all scorers with 30 points while Alyssa Griner added 16 in the win.
Playing without all-conference post player
Bryana Woodard, the Yeowomen were outscored 42-28 in the paint and lost the battle of the boards 38-30.
Oberlin, which had its five-game winning streak come to an end, is now 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC. OWU moved to 8-7 and matched Oberlin at 3-1 in league play.
The Yeowomen look to return to their winning ways as they travel to DePauw University on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. conference clash.
