Football Falls at Kalamazoo

Kalamazoo, MI - The Oberlin College football team suffered a 21-14 setback at Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets scored two first-quarter touchdowns and held off a late comeback bid from the Yeomen for the second year in a row.

Oberlin quarterback Chris Allen Jr. finished 23-of-39 passing for 211 yards and two scores to accompany his 39 yards rushing. Senior Brian Colarusso was his top target, finishing with a career-high 114 yards on a career-best 11 catches. Sophomore Ty Weatherspoon also had a career day as he corralled seven passes for 85 yards and caught both TD tosses from Allen.

Kalamazoo scored on its second possession of the game as Jon Brunette snuck in from 1-yard out to cap a 9-play, 36-yard drive.

After the ensuing Yeomen possession stalled out inside Kalamazoo territory, the Hornets offense went right back to work. Freshman backup quarterback Zach Metz temporarily had to come in for one play and he made it count by connecting with Andrew Widger for 31 yards on 3rd-and-7 to extend the drive. Three plays later, Brunette would punch it in again to make it 14-0 with 3:39 left to play in the first quarter.

The two foes would trade possessions throughout the bulk of the second quarter until the closing moments as Allen marched the Yeomen 91 yards in 2:53 to get them on the board. The jaunt consisted of a 14-yard first-down run by Allen on 3rd-and-12 and two 17-yard completions to Weatherspoon and Colarusso. The drive would ultimately be capped off with a 13-yard scoring strike from Allen to Weatherspoon on an inside slant.

After the halftime intermission, the Yeomen went three-and-out and Wes Penta's punt was blocked to set up the Hornets with a short field. K'Zoo wasted no time capitalizing on the big play as Josh Nicols connected with All-MIAA wideout Bubba Wilson on the very next play for a 41-yard TD to increase their cushion to 21-7.

The Yeomen would get back within one score early in the fourth quarter, finishing a methodical 13-play, 83-yard drive that churned 6:56 off the clock. This time Allen would find Weatherspoon in the corner of the endzone on a back-shoulder fade with just over 14 minutes left to play. The drive featured a 23-yard catch-and-run by Colarusso on 3rd-and-15 and a 15-yard run on 4th-and-1 by Allen to set up a goal-to-go situation.

The Oberlin defense would do its job, quickly getting the ball back to the offense with 12:20 left to play. The Yeomen were in search of a potential game-tying score after taking over at their own 2-yard line, following a perfect punt from Ian Burr. Later in the drive, backup quarterback Evan Smith-Rooks connected with Colarusso on the near sideline for 16 yards down to the Hornets' 39-yard line but a pair of Oberlin penalties would short circuit the drive.

Kalamazoo would take over on downs with 3:35 left to expire, picking up two first downs to complete the victory.

Luca Friedman and Hunter Green led the Yeomen defense with seven tackles each while David Harris added six stops in the loss.

Oberlin outgained Kalamazoo 321-292 and had 22 first downs compared to their 19.

The Yeomen return home to host Alvernia next Saturday at the Austin E. Knowlton Athletics Complex at 12 p.m.
