Oberlin, Ohio – Sophomore
Xander Francoeur scored three times as the Oberlin College men's soccer team turned in a dominant 4-0 victory over the visiting Alma College Scots on Saturday afternoon at Fred Shults Field.
It was a commanding Oberlin performance from start to finish as the Yeomen set the tone from the onset and never looked back.
After a few promising early opportunities from
Nasim Amer that went by the wayside, the Yeomen would eventually get on the board in the 24
th minute as
Toby Wells-Zimmerman settled a free ball outside the top of the box and sent in a piercing strike into the right corner of the net for his second tally of the season.
Less than six minutes later, some beautiful passing by Wells-Zimmerman and
Anthony Pacewicz put Francoeur in a dangerous position and the Cupertino, California, native would do the rest as he beat Scots' keeper Chris Henry to stake the Yeomen to a comfortable 2-0 cushion.
The Yeomen would take the two-score lead into the intermission and after some back-and-forth play after the restart, Oberlin would reassert its dominance as Francouer worked his way through the Alma rearguard for his second score of the day in the 67
th minute.
He would waste no time in completing hat trick, doing so less than three minutes later to run his season goal count to four and career ledger to five.
While corners were even at three apiece, the Yeomen finished with 20-9 advantage in shots which included a 12-2 margin in shots on goal.
Colvin Iorio made two saves in 70 minutes of work before giving way to
Luke Yates.
The Yeomen are back in action on Wednesday night at Capital University. The first touch is set for 7 p.m.
