Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Big Second Half Leads Oberlin to Season-Opening Win

Oberlin, Ohio - The Oberlin College women's soccer team scored four second-half goals en route to earning a 5-0 victory over the visiting Bluffton University Beavers on Thursday night at Fred Shults Field.

The win marked the first for head coach Taylor Houck, who made her Oberlin debut on the sidelines as the lead bench boss.

Four different Yeowomen accounted for the five home tallies with sophomore Heather Benway netting a pair to run her career account to six.

Oberlin controlled the run of play throughout the opening stanza, firing off 17 first-half shots compared to the Beavers' four. After a plethora of dangerous chances that went for naught, the Yeowomen would finally break through in the 26th minute as Maya Blevins lifted a long-range strike into the upper right corner that sailed over the head of Bluffton keeper Brielle Collier. Adrienne Sato set her up with a touch pass from the far side.

The work rate for the Yeowomen was there from the onset, led by Benway who had five first-half shots, including one off the crossbar.

After leading just 1-nil at the intermission, Benway gave Oberlin some breathing room in the 52nd minute with the help of a Zoe Garver feed and just seven minutes later she worked her through the Bluffton rearguard to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.

Oberlin would tack on two more scores down the stretch as Samantha Gilfond laced a left-footed strike into the upper 90 of the cage after getting a pass at the top of the box from Claudia Larrison. Larrison's giving ways continued in the closing moments as she set up fellow first-year Elena Foley for her first-career score.

Benji Maddox made four saves in 90 minutes of work between the pipes.

Oberlin finished with a 31-8 advantage in shots, including an 18-4 margin in shots on goal.

The Yeowomen are back in action on Saturday night at Wilmington College. The first touch is set for 7 p.m.
