No. 20 Big Red Take Two from Oberlin

Granville, OH – The 20th-ranked Denison University Big Red took both ends of a doubleheader from the Oberlin College baseball team, winning 9-4 and 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Yeomen hung with the Big Red throughout the bulk of game one as Yeomen hurler Andrew Shen made his second straight start against a nationally ranked opponent and impressed once again, allowing five runs on seven hits and five walks to go along with two strikeouts over five innings of work.

Denison did post a pair in the first inning but the Yeomen would cut the deficit in half in the top of third as Alex Vaughan poked an RBI single to right field to plate Jake Blozy.

The Big Red posted single tallies in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to increase its cushion out to 5-1 but the Yeomen wouldn't go away without a fight. The first three Oberlin hitters would reach base to start off the top part of the sixth and John Schooner would then come through a run-scoring single to center. Joe Strabley would later deliver a two-out run-producing infield single that scored Yianni Gardner to trim the gap back down to just two.

Unfortunately, the Big Red got those two Yeomen runs right back in the home half of the sixth and add a run in the seventh and eighth innings to create enough separation to secure the victory.

Oberlin would get another run in the eighth as Blozy roped a backside single through the hole on the left side to score Schooner but the final outcome was never in doubt.

The Yeomen had 10 hits in the loss with Schooner, Max Anastasio, and Strabley each finishing with two.

In the nightcap, rookie pitcher Max Wassarman was outstanding in his first collegiate start, allowing just three runs in 4.2 innings while scattering seven hits and just one walk. The Winchester, Massachusetts, native recorded seven ground ball outs and five through the air to go along with one strikeout.

The Yeomen struck first as Anastasio roped an RBI single to right field in the first inning but a pair of Big Red doubles in the in the bottom of the frame put them back out on top, 2-1.

Wassarman would keep the Big Red off the board in innings two through four but he was ultimately chased with two outs in the fifth after surrendering his third run of the game.

The Big Red would tack on two more in the sixth, which was more than enough cushion as the Yeomen bats went silent.

Oberlin finished with just five hits with Blozy, Anastasio, Strabley each having one while Jacob Thompson ended with two.

Taylor Perrett was simply sensational on the mound for the Big Red, tossing 118 pitches in the complete-game victory. He fanned 10 Yeomen and walked just one while racking up 13 ground ball outs.

The Yeomen will return home to cap off the 2022 season on Saturday against Hiram College. The team will honor its five seniors and retiring head coach Adrian Abrahamowicz.
