Terriers Sour Celebrations for Oberlin Baseball

Oberlin, Ohio – The visiting Hiram College Terriers closed out the 2022 season for the Oberlin College baseball team, earning a doubleheader sweep of the Yeomen by the scores of 9-7 and 7-4 on Saturday afternoon at Dill Field.

Prior to the game, the Yeomen honored their five senior members David Fineman, Drew Packs, Zachary Bayfield, Nick Dawkins, and Ian Ashby. In-between games there was an on-field celebration to recognize the achievements of retiring head coach Adrian Abrahamowicz.

The Yeomen led 7-1 through four innings of game one but the Terriers methodically worked their way back into the game, scoring eight runs over the final five frames to rally for the come-from-behind win.

Oberlin was up 5-0 after three innings as Chris Wolfe roped a two-run homer over the wall in left in the second. In the next inning, Jake Freed belted a two-run double before Wolfe came through again with a run-scoring double to center.

On the mound, Vince Dolcemaschio grinded his way through seven innings, scattering nine hits and three walks while tying a career-high with seven strikeouts. The Los Angeles, California, native left with the lead after allowing four runs over 121 pitches.

Oberlin increased its lead to six in the fourth on an RBI from Yianni Gardner and a sac fly from Max Anastasio.

Hiram would post a pair in the fifth and a single tally in the sixth before leveling the score with three in the eighth with the big blow coming courtesy of Hal Walker Jr.'s game-tying two-run homer. It was another long-ball in the ninth that ultimately did the Yeomen in as junior Michael Corsillo belted his first home run of the season over the wall in left to finish off the comeback victory.

Oberlin out-hit Hiram 14-9 in the nightcap but had just four runs to show for it, hindering their own cause with four errors defensively.

Jake Blozy and Jake Freed each had three hits in the loss, while Packs and John Schooner each had two.

Oberlin struck first with an RBI groundout by Anastasio in the home half of the first and would retake the lead in the third when Alex Vaughan made it 2-1 with a run-producing single to left field.

The Terriers would go out in front with a three-run sixth that featured just two hits and two critical Oberlin errors. Packs and fellow middle infielder Harry Kaplan would get a pair back for the Yeomen with RBI singles in the home half of the sixth to tie the score at 4-4.

Ashby was cruising along in relief, sitting down the first five batters he faced until Hiram Head Coach and former Yeomen great Phil Brua elected to pinch hit Ethan Fairbanks who rewarded his head coach with a two-out line-drive go-ahead home run over the wall in left in the top of the eighth.

Hiram tacked on two more insurance tallies in the ninth as the Yeomen never threatened down the stretch.

Jacob Thompson tossed 5.2 innings in the no-decision, allowing seven hits and four runs but just two were earned. He finished with three walks and three strikeouts.

Oberlin ends its season at 7-29 and 3-15 in the NCAC.
