Tiffin, Ohio – A six-run second inning by the Heidelberg University Student Princes doomed the Oberlin College baseball team as the Berg toppled the Yeomen 7-3 on Tuesday afternoon at the newly-turfed Peaceful Valley field.
The Yeomen managed just three hits through the front eight innings before showing some signs of life in the ninth with three more.
Max Cairo went 2-for-4 with a double, while
Jake Blozy finished 1-for-4 to extend his on-base streak to 11 straight games.
The six-run inning for the Student Princes was aided by two of Oberlin's five errors in the game, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch, but the Berg did belt out five hits in the rally.
Oberlin's first run of the game came in the fifth as a defensive miscue by the Berg allowed Cairo to score to make it 6-1.
The Yeomen entered the ninth down by six and tried to put together one last push as Blozy led off with a single and would then trot home on
Yianni Gardner's second home run of the season to trim the gap down to four with nobody out.
Max Anastasio would follow with a one-out double but he was ultimately left stranded at third when the game concluded.
Freshman
Leo Rochman made his first-career start and tossed the front two innings while the Yeomen's bullpen contingency of
Luigi Smarro (3 IP),
Jay Aghanya (1 IP), and
Alexander Norris (2 IP) was impressive over the final six frames, combining to allow just one run on four hits while striking out six.
The loss dropped Oberlin back to 5-12 on the year while Heidelberg improved to 9-11.
Oberlin returns to action at home on Thursday with an NCAC doubleheader against Allegheny. First pitch of the twinbill is set for high noon.
