Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Yeowomen Hold off Tigers for Saturday Victory

Sewanee, TN- On the road for a pair of matches in southern Tennessee, the Oberlin women's lacrosse team took on Sewanee Saturday afternoon. In a second half full of runs, the Yeowomen held off a late comeback from the Tigers for an 18-17 victory. Oberlin moves to 2-0 ahead of a tough Sunday matchup with Rhodes.

Scoring a handful of goals for her second straight game, Audrey Koren put away five scores while assisting on one. Izzy Sunday, Lauren Mills, Emily Shimabukuro, and Annie Payne also had multi-goal games, while Mills and Payne each tallied a pair of assists in addition.

Oberlin goal keepers Logan McDermott-Mostowy and Sophia Ferrantelli split time in cage and combined for six saves. On the defense, Bette Imhoff brought in four ground balls while also forcing four turnovers.

Oberlin jumped out of the gates early as Ellie Jensen found first-year Mills inside the eight to put the Yeowomen on the board. The Crimson and Gold rode that momentum to score five more unanswered goals, led by Koren who notched three of her own. Shimabukuro finished out the quarter on an assist from Koren to maintain their 7-2 lead.

Imhoff kept the goals coming as she found the back of the net for the first time this season. The Tigers climbed their way back into the game on a 5-0 run before Koren converted a shot to slow the home team. Payne tallied her first goal of the year just before the teams went into half, Oberlin up 11-8.

Sewanee opened the second half with a pair of a goals and look for more until Jensen won a contested ground ball and made a quick shot into net. Sunday followed that up with another score seconds later. Payne capped the quarter on a precision cross-crease feed to Mills to give Oberlin a four-goal cushion. Sewanee put up a late run at the end of the quarter to tie the game at 15-15.

Opening the scoring in the fourth period, Payne put one in the back of the next on free position opportunity. Sewanee responded with the equalizer but just a minute later, Oberlin retook the lead for the final time. The Tigers scored again in the final minute of the game but the Yeowomen held them off for the 18-17 victory.

The Yeowomen remain in Sewanee for their next game tomorrow, March 6. A neutral contest with Rhodes will start at 10am EST with live stream available here, and live stats available here.
