Softball Home Opener Spoiled by Bluffton

Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College softball team took to Culhane Field for the first time this season, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the visiting Bluffton University Beavers by the scores of 12-7 and 13-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

First-year Loren Carter headlined the day for the Yeowomen as she extended her season-opening hitting streak to 13 games. She ended the day 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles.

Game one couldn't have gotten off to a better start for Oberlin, scoring six runs in the first inning but the Yeowomen couldn't make it stand up as Bluffton responded with 12 unanswered runs until Oberlin finally got back on the board in the seventh.

The first six Yeowomen hitters reached base with Cat Moruzzi driving in the game's first run with a single back up the middle. After a double from Carter, Kathryn Beeman roped a two-run double to the gap in left center to make it 3-0. The rally rolled on with Lalli Lopez delivering an RBI single and two more tallies would get posted on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk to Haley Bartsch.

Unfortunately, the Beavers responded with four runs in the second and tied it with a pair in fourth.

After six hits in the first, the Yeowomen had just five hits the rest of the way off of relief pitcher Erin Norman.

The Beavers would take the lead for good with a four-run fifth before adding on two more in the seventh. Lopez had an RBI single in the seventh to cap the scoring for Oberlin in the lid-lifter.

The nightcap was nearly a mirror image of game one as Oberlin raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first but went scoreless the rest of the way as the Beavers scored 13 times between the third and fifth innings to complete the run-rule victory.

An RBI double to right center by Carter got Oberlin on the board and Kyra Davis followed with a two-run single to stake Oberlin to an early advantage.

First-year Liz Laudicina cruised through the front two innings inside the circle but ran into trouble in third before giving way to classmate Calliope Lissak, who got touched up for 11 hits and eight runs in 2.2 innings. However, just three of those runs were earned.

Both Bluffton starters lasted just a third of inning but Katie Fleshman was just as impressive as Norman out of the bullpen as she blanked the Yeowomen for 4.2 innings, allowing just three hits.

Oberlin fell back to 4-8-1 on the year, while Bluffton moved to 6-8.

The Yeowomen are back in action tomorrow afternoon at home against Chatham. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 3:30 p.m.
