University Heights, OH - The Oberlin College softball team nearly earned a split, but night fell fast in game two for a 0-1-1 day at John Carroll. The Blue Streaks dominated Oberlin by a score of 18-2 in game one before tying 10-10 in the second half of the doubleheader. The Yeowomen move to 4-6-1 ahead of their home opener this Saturday.
Â
Alaina Di Dio,
Liz Laudicina, and
Jess Friedman shared the mound in game one and were unable to slow the bats of JCU in the lid-lifter.Â
Â
The Blue Streaks came out strong against the Yeowomen, amassing eight of their runs in the first and second innings.
Loren Carter finally got Oberlin on the board with a single through the left side to bring
Haley Bartsch home. The onslaught continued for the Crimson and Gold as they gave up 10 more runs in the following two innings. A single from Bartsch brought Friedman home in the fifth, but it was too large a deficit to overcome and the Yeowomen fell to the by run-rule.
Â
Katie Austin got the start in the second game, pitching three innings before Di Dio stepped back in to close. The duo put up four strikeouts before the game was called.Â
Â
John Carroll got on the board first with a trio of runs in the opening inning, but Oberlin caught fire in their six-run second-inning response. Dio led the way with a single to bring
Kyra Davis in before a hit by Bartsch brough around both
Lalli Lopez and
Kathryn Beeman. Tied up,
Cat Moruzzi hit a two-run single and would later score on a hit up the middle by Carter.Â
With the lead headed into the third, Oberlin tacked on another four runs to sit ahead of JCU, 10-4. The crooked number came courtesy of a run-scoring single to center by
Anna Slebonick before Moruzzi drove in a pair with an opposite-field double to left. The final tally of the day for Oberlin was posted on a sac fly by Davis.Â
Unfortunately, the Blue Streaks stormed back in the bottom of the third and fourth innings to tie the game at ten all. With night falling quickly, Oberlin looked to take the lead and secure the game but without lights in the outfield, the game was called and thus a 10-10 tie for both teams.
The Yeowomen bring it back to Oberlin for their home opener this Saturday, March 26 as they take on Chatham at 1 p.m.
