Game Recap: Baseball |

Yeomen Get Swept on Sunday

Richmond, IN - The Oberlin College pitching staff was plagued by a combined 26 walks over two games as the Earlham College Quakers won both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game series sweep of the Yeomen.

Earlham took the lid-lifter 15-6 and followed with a 6-3 win in the nightcap to make the bus ride back to Ohio that much longer.

Game One Recap
Oberlin starter Justin Fuls struggled with his command from the onset and the stable of relievers that followed didn't fare much better as the Yeomen staff issued 18 walks in the loss.

Fuls lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing six runs on five hits and five walks, while striking out three but he left with the Quakers leading 6-0 in the third.

Oberlin tried to work its way back into the game with a four-run fourth that featured a two-run double to the gap in right center by Jay Aghanya and an RBI single to left center by Jacob Thompson

After Earlham posted a solo tally in the bottom of the fourth, Oberlin responded with a pair in the top of the fifth to shrink the lead down to 7-6 at the midway point of the game. Junior Max Anastasio delivered the big blow of the inning with a two-RBI double to left center that scored Jake Freed and Drew Packs

Unfortunately, the Yeomen bullpen couldn't find the strike zone as Earlham answered back with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on just one hit and no errors but they were gifted six walks in the inning.

Earlham would add on two more in the sixth and two in the eighth to leave no doubt in the eventual outcome.

Oberlin had eight hits in the game, led by Anastasio's pair of doubles.

Game Two Recap
Oberlin mustered just five hits in the back half of the twinbill, which made it tough to overcome seven walks.

Earlham led 1-0 heading into the third inning but the Yeomen would take a 2-1 lead in the top of the frame as Chris Wolfe poked an RBI single back up the box and Freed would later follow with a sacrifice fly.

Unfortunately, the Quakers answered right back in the bottom of the inning with the first three hitters reaching via a free pass on two walks and a hit batter, setting the table for a three-run inning and a 4-2 lead.

Earlham would push one across in the fourth and Oberlin would get it back in the sixth on two Earlham errors to make it 5-3. However, a questionable balk call in the eighth allowed the Quakers to add on another insurance tally.

William Kennedy took the loss in his first-career start, allowing five runs over five innings to go along with six walks and four punchouts. Andrew Shen worked the final three frames, allowing just one hit and one run while fanning three and walking two.

The Yeomen are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday afternoon at John Carroll University. The first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
