Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Yeowomen Sting Yellow Jackets on Sophomores’ Career Days

Berea, OH- Getting their highly anticipated season underway, the Oberlin women's lacrosse team took down Baldwin Wallace on the road Wednesday night by a score of 18-12. This was the largest margin of victory the Yeowomen have had in a season opener since they hosted BW in 2018.

Leading the Yeowomen attack, Audrey Koren amassed five goals and an assist in what was a career day for the sophomore. Also putting up career numbers was Emily Shimabukuro with six points that included four goals with three of them coming in the first half. A trio of freshman got their feet wet in the game, led by Izzy Sunday with a pair of goals and three assists.

Having not competed for the Yeowomen since 2019, Logan McDermott-Mostowy stood tall for Oberlin racking up an impressive 12 saves in the first half alone. The senior keeper subbed out for the freshman goalie Sophia Ferrantelli who added another five saves in the second half.

The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard first after a quick fast-break downfield for a goal. After conceding another goal, freshman Lauren Mills got the Yeowomen on the scoreboard with her first career goal. Shimabukuro and Koren added scores of their own to make the game tied at the end of the first quarter.

Just like the first, BW scored an early pair of goals in the second quarter until rookie Alexis Escobedo put a shot in the back of the net for the first goal of her collegiate campaign. Shimabukuro found the net in back-to-back possessions to give the Crimson and Gold their first lead of the game. The Yellow Jackets responded with a couple goals of their own before Escobedo earned a goal while the Yeowomen had a man-up advantage

Tied 7-7, Oberlin came right out of the gates with a goal from Koren to regain the lead. The Yeowomen scored the next seven goals without answer from the Jackets until a fourth quarter shot ended the run. Starting with Reilly Jackman, the teams went goal-for-goal but the home team could never catch up as Oberlin won their season opener 18-12.

Looking to keep the wins coming, the Yeowomen stay on the road for their next game as they head south to Sewanee, TN for a pair of matches hosted at the University of the South. The first game will take place against Sewannee on Saturday, March 5 at 12pm, with the second game to follow on Sunday against Rhodes at 10am.
