Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team finished on the wrong end of a hard-fought 62-58 decision against the visiting Ohio Northern University Polar Bears on Tuesday night at Philips Gym.
Senior
Dorde Otasevic led the Yeomen charge with a season-opening double-double performance with 16 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a team-high three steals.
Dimitrije Radusinovic added 13 points, while
Andrew Gannon chipped in with nine.
Yuuki Okubo dished out eight assists to go along with eight points, while rookie
Milun Micanovic was efficient in his collegiate debut with eight points on 4-of-6 shooting in 15 minutes of work
Otasevic cashed in a triple at the 14:23 mark to give Oberlin an early 12-7 lead, marking the largest advantage by either side in the opening half. The Niksic, Montenegro, native dialed in another long-range strike with 4:17 left to make it 26-22 in favor of the Yeomen but Oberlin would ultimately settle for a slim 28-27 halftime cushion.
It was nip-and-tuck throughout the second half, but the Polar Bears created some significant separation with multiple nine-point leads in the midway portion of the frame. An old-school 3-point play by Radusinovic got the Yeomen back within four, 51-47, with 6:11 still to expire.
It was later just a two-point ONU edge following a Radusinovic layup at the 3:20 mark to setup a battle to the bitter end.
Will Bousquette III connected on a 3-pointer with eight ticks left to make it 59-57 but ONU held on with a pair of free throws from Carson Conley.
Points in the paint were even at 34 and rebounds at 37, but the ONU bench outscored its Oberlin counterparts 25-12.
The Yeomen are back in action on Friday night at Case Western Reserve. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
