Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's basketball team was plagued by 18 turnovers, which allowed the visiting Carnegie Mellon University Tartans to earn an 87-68 wire-to-wire victory over the Yeomen on Tuesday night at Philips Gym.
Junior
Dimitrije Radusinovic did all he could to keep the Yeomen in it as he poured in 24 points, dialing up seven 3-pointers along the way.
Dorde Otasevic chipped in with 11 points, while
Asaan Snipes-Rea added 10 points off the bench.
Oberlin was out of sorts from the onset, turning the ball over on its first three possessions of the game as the Tartans quickly grabbed a 9-2 lead. A triple-hit from Radusinovic trimmed the deficit down to one, 13-12, with 11:28 left in the opening half.
Following an
Andrew Gannon 3-pointer at the 6:16 mark that made it 26-22, the Tartans would response with an 8-0 spurt to push the lead out to 12 but the Yeomen closed the half strong to shrink the margin down to just six, 38-32, at the break.
Unfortunately, the Tartans would take control of the contest following the restart. After Oberlin netted the first basket of the second half, CMU ripped off a 12-0 burst to swell its advantage to 16 at 50-34.
The Tartans' cushion would only grow from there as their lead ballooned to as many as 21 with just under 14 minutes left to play.
Oberlin continued to fight, getting back within 12, 65-53, on Snipes-Rea fastbreak layup with 7:55 remaining in the game but the Yeomen would get no closer the rest of the way.
Justin Allen paced the Tartans with 24 points while Jack Stone added 20 off the bench.
CMU, which moved to 4-0 on the year, had a large advantage at the charity stripe as they hoisted 26 free throws while the Yeomen attempted just eight. The Tartans cashed in 21 of their freebies while Oberlin made five.
The Yeomen, who fell to 2-4, are back in action Saturday as they will host Alma College at 3 p.m.
