Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College football team honored its senior class prior to kickoff but the visiting College of Wooster Scots spoiled the celebration as they left town with a 56-13 victory over the Yeomen to cap off the 2022 season for both teams.
Senior quarterback
Chris Allen Jr. ended his career by going 13-of-30 passing for 152 yards. The Atco, New Jersey, native threw one touchdown and rushed for another but was intercepted four times.
Classmate
Brian Colarusso had a strong finish to his Oberlin tenure, scoring his 12
th career touchdown as he snagged eight balls for 125 yards though the air and led the team with 28 yards rushing.
Backup QB
Matt Siff entered late and finished 4-of-11 passing for 61 yards. The three other seniors;
Bobby deLuna,
Brandon Davies, and
Hugh Edward did not play due to injury.
After a quick three-and-out by the Scots to start the game, the Yeomen appeared to be going in for a score on their opening possession but an ill-advised throw by Allen Jr. was picked off in the end zone by Matt Ulishey.
After two more traded possessions the Scots would get on the board with 2:49 left in the first quarter as Mateo Renteria snuck in from a yard out on 4
th-and-goal to cap off a 12-play, 62-yard march that took 4:58 off the clock.
Wooster would quickly push the lead out to 14-0 as Allen Jr. was strip-sacked by Domenic DeMuth and Mason Gilton scooped up the fumble and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.
However, the Oberlin response was just what the doctor ordered as
Solomon Brennan returned the ensuing kickoff 73 yards to setup 1
st-and-goal for the Yeomen with Allen Jr. barreling his way in from a yard out to trim the Scots' lead in half after one quarter.
Unfortunately, the Scots took control of the game in the second quarter, finding paydirt four times in the frame to carry a 42-13 lead into the intermission. Oberlin would score once in the period, however, as Allen Jr. threw a beautiful ball along the near sideline for a 36-yard touchdown to Colarusso.
The Yeomen defense continued to fight in the second half, holding the Scots scoreless in the third but Wooster would tack on two more touchdowns in the fourth to complete the game's scoring.
Wooster recorded 23 first downs compared to Oberlin's 12 and out-gained the Yeomen 470-235.
Elliot Meyer had a career day with 16 tackles, while
Brandon Hall (12),
Hunter Green (11), and
David Harris (10) all finished with double-digit stops as well.
The Scots end their season at 6-4 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC, while Oberlin concludes its year at 0-10 and 0-8 in the NCAC.
The Yeomen will shift their focus to the 2023 season during the non-traditional spring season.
