Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Yeowomen Take Down Kenyon in Overtime Classic

Oberlin, OH – Riding on a three-game win streak, the Oberlin women's basketball team hit the court for a date with their biggest rival on Saturday evening. A pair of buzzer beaters and a triple-double performance from Camille Zinaich gave Oberlin the 77-75 win over Kenyon. The Yeowomen move to 12-1 record on the season and 6-1 in the NCAC.

The visiting Ladies came out with fire in the opening quarter, getting on the scoreboard in the opening seconds of action. Jaedyn O'Reilly responded right away for the Yeowomen with a shot in the paint. Tied up early, the two teams went point-for-point throughout the majority of the quarter with the Kenyon Ladies coming out on top 19-18.

The momentum stayed on the side of the Ladies as Oberlin struggled to find their defensive groove. Falling behind 28-20, the Yeowomen responded with jumpers from Sammy Spanier and Zinaich to come back within four. After a quiet first quarter from the Yeowomen's leading scorer, Gina Lombard finally made her way into the green with a trademark three-pointer. With under one minute remaining, and down 32-31, the Yeowomen scrambled to get a shot off. Unsuccessful in all their attempts, Oberlin went to the locker room down at the half for only the second time this season.

Needing a big third quarter, the Crimson and Gold offense got cooking early as a Kendal McCall jumper gave Oberlin their first lead of the night at 35-34. Finding themselves down again seconds later, Zinaich drove to the rim for a basket while drawing the foul from Kenyon. Capitalizing on the and-one opportunity, Zinaich sank her free throw to tie the game at 40. A burst of momentum for the home team ended abruptly as hit another shot from behind the arc. A slew of free throws brought the game within one but Kenyon's high-powered offense put the Yeowomen on their heels as the clock expired with Oberlin down 53-46.

Aiming for a fourth quarter comeback, senior Spanier put up four points right away to make it a one-possession game. In response, Kenyon put up five unanswered points until Zinaich locked in her second triple-double of the season to stop the drought. As the minutes ticked down, the Yeowomen kept pace behind the Ladies before Lombard knocked down her second three of the night to bring the score to 63-64. With less than a minute remaining, Woodard tied the game with a free throw, but Kenyon quickly responded with a trio of free throws of their own.  With just three seconds remaining and need three points to tie, O'Reilly swung the ball out to Spanier for the game-tying shot. Shooting the ball at the buzzer, Spanier hit nothing but net to send the game into overtime tied at 67-67.

The opening minute of extra time saw back-to-back jumpers from Zinaich to keep maintain the deadlocked score. The Yeowomen almost broke away from the Ladies in the final minutes, but foul trouble plagued them, and Kenyon tied the game again with 33 seconds remaining. Strategizing over a quick timeout, Oberlin ran the clock down for the final shot of the night. A missed jumper by Zinaich in the last second fell into the hands in McCall who put it back up as the clock hit zero. An instant classic for Oberlin history, the Yeowomen took a 77-75 to complete the comeback against Kenyon and remain undefeated at home.

This is the first overtime game for the Yeowomen this season, with the last one coming in the version of a loss to Bluffton on November 23, 2019. Zinaich finished the game with her second triple-double of the season and boasting a stat line of 21 points, 16 rebounds, and 13 assists. All three categories come as career highs for the first-year guard. Four other Yeowomen finished in double-digits, with Woodard notching five rebounds and five assists.

Oberlin looks to keep the win streak rolling when they return to the court on Wednesday, January 19 for a date with Allegheny at home. Tip-off is set for 6pm with the live stream available here and live stats available here.
