Oberlin, OH – Ready to avenge their 2020 loss to the Gators, Oberlin took on Allegheny at home on Wednesday night. A high-scoring first half paced the way for the Yeowomen as they cruised to 79-54 victory. The Yeowomen improve to 13-1 on the season and boast a 7-1 record in NCAC action.
Oberlin kept the game close for much of the first quarter, until a three-pointer from
Maggie Balderstone gave the Yeowomen the distance they needed. Up 13-6, the high-powered offense put up another six points in the final two minutes led by rookie
Bryana Woodard. The first-year center tallied ten points in the first period of play while pulling down and additional six rebounds.
A quiet first quarter for the visitors, Allegheny opened the second period with a quick layup to hit double-digits on the scoreboard. Woodard responded immediately with a layup, starting an 11-4 run by the Yeowomen.
Alyson Jefferson knocked down four points in the run that gave her squad a 30-14 lead. The momentum stayed on the side of the home team as Balderstone stepped back and drilled another basket from behind the arc with 3:53 remaining in the half. The Squirrels kept rolling through the final minutes of the half, putting up another 12 points to double up on the Gators and take a 44-22 lead at the half.
The second half got off to a quick start as Allegheny put up a pair of buckets before
Sammy Spanier drilled a three from deep to counter. After a pair of free throws from
Camille Zinaich at the 7:23 mark, the offense fell quiet for a few minutes until
Rowan Smith put up a jumper to end the silence. Moments later, Jefferson got the crowd on their feet with a three-pointer to extend the Yeowomen's lead to 23 points. In the waning seconds of the quarter, Balderstone sank their third three-pointer of the night before the clock expired and gave Oberlin the 64-40 headed into the final period of action.
Oberlin opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 with three different Yeowomen contributing.
Jaedyn O'Reilly got the scoring started followed by Jefferson and
Kendal McCall to bring up the rear. The Gators ended the run with a jumper in the paint but could not stop the host team as Oberlin put up another six points and held Allegheny to two through the mid-point of the quarter. A 10-3 push from the Gators in the final minutes of play was not enough as Oberlin took down the NCAC opponent by a 79-54 margin.
The win saw impressive performances from a trio of players, starting with Woodard who led the team in scoring and notched her second double-double of the season with 23 points and ten rebounds. Jefferson also had a big night, putting up season-high 19 points and tallying five steals after sitting out the three previous games. Setting a new career-high in scoring was sophomore guard Balderstone with 11 points highlighted by a game-high three three-pointers.
