Oberlin, Ohio – Jack Clement's buzzer-beating layup left the Oberlin College men's basketball team heartbroken as the visiting Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops escaped town with a 79-78 win over the Yeomen on Thursday night.
A pair of clutch free throws from
Dorde Otasevic had the Yeomen out in front by one with 25 seconds to go and Oberlin still had four fouls to give before sending Ohio Wesleyan to free throw line. The Yeomen elected to use two of those fouls as the clock trickled down to just 5.3 seconds but after getting the ball at the top of the circle, Clement knifed his way into the paint for the game-winning layup.
Sophomore
Dimitrije Radusinovic led the Yeomen with a game-high 18 points, while senior
Wolf Moser dropped in 16 points in the loss. Otasevic added 14 points and a team-high five rebounds, while
Yuuki Okubo netted a career-high 12 points to accompany his five assists.
The Bishops opened the game on 10-0 run before the Yeomen got on the board courtesy of a Radusinovic triple-hit at the 17:41 mark. Oberlin worked its way back into the game, trimming the gap down five, 17-12, on a pair of Moser free throws. The Bishops later led 35-25 but a mini 6-0 Yeomen spurt trimmed the gap down to four, which was the eventual halftime differential as the Bishops led 39-35 at the break.
Oberlin evened the count at 41-41 just minutes into the second session on back-to-back long-range strikes from Moser and Okubo. With just over 11 minutes to go, the Yeomen would claim their first lead of the game as
Cole Otley came off the Yeomen bench to cash a pair of 3-pointers to give the home side a 58-56 advantage with 11:29 remaining.
The Bishops answered with a 10-2 run to reclaim a 66-60 cushion but the Yeomen wouldn't go away quietly as they battled back to tie it three different times over the next few minutes with the final time being at 73-73 with 2:51 left to play to setup the exciting finish.
Oberlin shot 49.2 percent from the floor with 29 makes on 59 attempts, which included a blistering 57.7 percent clip in the second half where they went 15-of-26. Bishops finished at 47.5 percent (29-of-61) and were a perfect 10-of-10 at the charity stripe. OWU won the battle of the boards 39-24, which included a 14-7 advantage on the offensive end – resulting in 16-6 edge in second chance points.
The loss dropped the Yeomen's record back to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in the NCAC. OWU improved to 8-6 and 5-2 in league play.
The Yeomen's busy week continues on Saturday night as they welcome the Hiram College Terriers to town for a 6 p.m. conference clash.
