Oberlin, Ohio – The Oberlin College men's tennis team opened the spring season, falling 6-1 to Division II Findlay on Saturday afternoon at the Don Hunsinger Courts.
Using the Division II scoring format, The Yeomen were able to secure the lone doubles point by winning in the first and third flights.
James Dill and
Sean Billerbeck were 6-2 winners over Jorge Barnuevo and Alfredo Berlanga in the lead spot, while the duo of
Sam Topper and
Ben Echikson followed suit with a 6-3 victory over Florian Bauer and Mark Ivanov.
"We came out strong in doubles and played very aggressive," Head Coach
Eric Ishida said. "I was really impressed with the way we competed throughout the match for not having played in so long and was happy for the guys to have that feeling again."
While the Oilers swept through all six singles matches, the Yeomen certainly put up a fight along the way.
Freshman
Rohan Gold won his first-ever singles set in the fifth position, beating Octavio Carrasco 6-3. After dropping the second set 6-1, Gold and Carrasco went swing-for-swing in the super-breaker but unfortunately the Yeomen rookie would finish on the wrong end of a 11-9 count.
The No. 4 battle also went the distance as Topper was a 6-2 winner in the second after he lost the opening set 6-1 to Andrew Cordita, who finished the job with a 6-3 win in the third.
Elliot Nuss and Billerbeck each dropped their first sets 7-5 in the top two flights before being dispatched in straight sets, while Dill ended on the wrong end of a 7-6 (6-3) tiebreak in his first set in the third flight.
The Oberlin College men's tennis team is back in action next Saturday at home against Tiffin University.
